SPYY + CLYW

That’s right!!  SPYY and CLYW have joined forces to design a new yoyo together from the ground up.  Two weeks before worlds Steve and I met up in Calgary to start on the design.  We wanted to make sure that it had features and personality from both companies so that it could be a true collaboration of both of our strengths … and I think we definitely accomplished that.

We’re sorry, but you’re going to have to wait for the finished product to see this yoyo, so hang tight.  All we can say right now is that it will have flowable silicone, large bearing, SPYY spikes and a very unique profile shape.

On this project helping out with artwork is a brilliantly talented artist and yoyoer from Brazil, Sid Seed … we’re sooooooo excited and honoured to have him on board.  This is also Sid’s first collab with a yoyo manufacturer, which makes this even more extra special.  We can’t wait to see what he puts together for us!!

With the yoyo community being such a close knit group of people, working on collaborations together is a really great way to bring us closer together.  We’re really excited for this release as it is bringing together the only yoyo manufacturers in Canada to create something special for all of you … so we hope that you will love what we came up with.

… oh ya … the name … how could I miss that … haha

What name could combine both SPYY and CLYW better than: the Galactic Goose

New Wooly Marmots

We have two Limited Edition Wooly Marmots that will be released on the store soon.

The hop-u-san edition in Pink.

Apparently “hop-u-san” is a popular nickname for Jensen and his “hop-style” in Japan, so he really wanted to do something special artwork and laser engraving to celebrate this.  We also have some very exciting news to go along with this release:  Jensen will be joining Ryosuke at the 44Clash contest, which will be held on Sept 20-21st.  Can’t wait guys!!

Also available will be a Bronze Laser Engraved edition of the Wooly Marmot.

Jensen’s favourite part about these yoyos being released is how good they look as a dual tone.  Oh my!!  Neapolitan ice-cream … yummm!!  So why not get both??

The Campfire name actually came from a facebook message from John Higby … where John had a dream that we designed a plastic yoyo and called it “the Campfire”.  I was so inspired by this name (and since we are a ways out from designing a plastic yoyo) that I felt that it would be the perfect name for our new yoyo.

The Campfire is our answer to the “lower cost” yoyos that you’ve been seeing at your favourite yoyo stores.  We’ve minimalized it as much as we thought we could.  No IRG, Small diameter/narrow profile (less metal cut = less machine time), simple inner hub shape, solid anodized colours, easy laser engraving … we still haven’t nailed down a price yet, but once we know you’ll know as well.

The idea for the Campfire is a cheaper Caribou Lodge pocket yoyo that you can take anywhere you want and not feel like the pocket of your pants is going to explode … all while still mainting the unique look, feel and play of a CLYW yoyo.  I’m still waiting for the silicone to dry so it better play like a CLYW yoyo … haha

Here are some screen shots from CAD

Once we came up with the design and shape I ran it past a couple of our senior team members and friends to see what they thought.  All systems were go so I sent the CAD file to our machinist.

While we waited for the Campfire to hit the machine we got Jensen to come up with some sweet art for it.  You can see the main logo on the last post I made.  A more simplified verion of it will be laser engraved on the inside of the hub.  Can’t wait!!

Some of the specs so far are:

1.90″ (48.3mm) Diameter

1.39″ (35.2mm) Width

Large Bearing

Silicone Response

Proto #1 is 62.5g sans string

I will post an update as soon as we get to try it out … so stay tuned!!  Hope you like it so far!!

Alberta Yoyo Video

A couple weeks ago I was lucky enough to meet Kevin Comeau from Ottawa, Ontario.  He was on summer vacation with his parents on a really sweet adventure through Alberta.  They started their vacation in Drumheller and then headed off to Edmonton where they stayed at West Edmonton Mall.  While they were at the mall we got to hangout for a bit and trade some tricks.

Once the Comeau’s had enough of the mall they headed to the Rocky Mountains and drove along the Icefields Parkway from Jasper to Banff and finished their trip in Calgary (the home of SPYY).  Along the way Kevin filmed the scenes at every stop.  I really loved what you put together Kevin.  You definitely summed up the beautiful parts of Alberta.  Great editing too!!  Thanks so much for sharing this with us.

WORLDS!!!

Worlds has been sooo sooo exciting this year!!  It’s been a real change of pace this year, much more relaxing and laid back.  The team has been spending a lot of time together and helping each other out with optimizing their freestyles.

Last night we got to see Save Deth Volume 2, which was absolutely amazing!!  4 of our team members are in the DVD and they all killed it!!  Brilliant job by everyone involved!!  You are all going to love it!!  By far one of the best and most professionally done Yoyo DVD to date.

We have some exciting news … Hadrien Bennaceur, French National Champion, has joined team CLYW!!  We’ve been pretty good friends since we met at worlds in 2007 and it is an honour for us to have him join our team. His profile will come soon.

If you’ve been following the boards you may have seen the extra exciting news … Jensen Kimmitt placed 1st place in the 2nd round of prelims.  His freestyle was on fire, he was so calm and collected and just did his thing.  Alex Berenguel also brought it as well and will be going to finals!!  After missing out last year he’s pretty excited.  Also our newest team member Hadrien will be in finals as well.  So in total 3 CLYW team members will be in the finals.  Awesome Awesome Awesome!!

Sebastian, Krisztian, Charles and Zach all did really well … unfortunately they didn’t make it into finals.  The judges were tough and they sure must have been looking for something different this year.  I’m so proud of you guys and how hard you’ve been working this year.   Keep it up!!

Boyd Seth will also be competing in Spin Tops as well, so we’re all rooting for him.  We’re thinking of starting work on a signature series Spin Top for him that’s made from 2 sticks a raccoon and some chewing gum.  We’ll see how it turns out.

2A freestyles are starting now … gotta run!!  Have a great night everyone!!
